AMS (Automatic Material System) is a multi-spool feeder that automatically loads, switches and retracts filament — enabling multi-color prints and hands-free spool changes. Popularized by Bambu Lab's AMS, similar systems exist across brands.
What AMS gives you
- Multi-color printing: automatic filament switching mid-print
- Convenience: spool auto-loading, runout handling
- RFID recognition: some systems read spool chips for automatic settings
The lock-in consideration
Some AMS units favor proprietary RFID spools: third-party spools still print, but without automatic recognition. If you value choice, check whether the system supports standard 1.75 mm spools and open profiles. VOXFIL filament is open-compatible 1.75 mm — it prints in AMS systems that accept standard spools, at factory-direct prices.
