AMS (Automatic Material System) and dry boxes are often confused. They do different jobs — here's the breakdown.

What each one does

AMS-style systemDry box
PurposeAuto-load/switch spools, multi-color printingKeep filament dry during storage & printing
CompatibilityOften proprietary (RFID/lock-in)Universal — any 1.75 mm spool
DryingSome models have drying; many don'tPassive (desiccant) or active (heated)
Cost$150–400 per unit$30–120

Do you need both?

Print multi-color? You want an AMS — but check if it accepts third-party spools. Print functional parts in PA/PC? You need a dry box regardless. Most professional users end up with: one AMS (color) + one heated dryer (engineering materials).

The open-filament note

Proprietary AMS ecosystems often favor their own spools. VOXFIL stays open-compatible 1.75 mm — works with open AMS systems and every dry box, without the premium markup.
