Datasheets are useful; your own tests are decisive. Here's a DIY strength-testing methodology that produces honest comparisons.

1. Print standardized coupons

Print tensile dogbones (ASTM D638 Type V is printable) at the same settings for every material: 0.2 mm layers, 3 perimeters, 40% infill, same orientation (flat). Label each with material and batch.

2. Test the same way

  • Tensile: hang weights with a bucket, add water gradually until failure — record kg
  • Bend: support a 60 mm bar at both ends, press in the middle with a luggage scale
  • Impact: drop a steel ball from increasing heights onto a fixed plate
  • Snap test: fold a thin coupon — count bends until break (great for PLA vs PLA+)

3. Control the variables

Dry all samples, print on the same printer, same nozzle, same day if possible. Test 3 coupons per material and average. Orientation: X/Y prints are always stronger than Z — test both if your application loads Z.

4. What to record

Break force, deflection, failure mode (brittle snap vs ductile tear). Brittle snap at low force = weak layer adhesion = bad drying or bad material. This method is exactly how we'd compare any two suppliers.
