Why does a 1 kg spool of PLA print more parts than 1 kg of TPU? Density. Here's what every buyer should know.

Density = length per kg

Filament is sold by weight, but you print by length. 1 kg of PLA (1.24 g/cm³) contains roughly 330 m of 1.75 mm filament; 1 kg of flexible TPU (1.21 g/cm³) is similar; denser materials like PETG (1.27 g/cm³) give slightly less length per kg.

Why it matters

  • Part costing: calculate grams per part, not spools per month
  • Fair price comparison: compare $/kg, then adjust for density
  • Net vs gross weight: some listings include the spool — always check "net filament weight"
