FDM printing emits ultrafine particles (UFPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — more from ABS/ASA, less from PLA/PETG. Here's the practical safety picture.
What each material emits
- PLA: low VOC — the safest common material; still emits particles
- PETG: low-moderate VOC
- ABS/ASA: higher VOC (styrene family) — ventilate or filter
- PA/PC: moderate VOC + higher temperatures
The safe setup
- Enclosed printer + carbon filter (HEPA for particles + activated carbon for VOCs)
- Vent to outside where possible (window exhaust for ABS/ASA)
- Print PLA/PETG in the same room as people only with filtration; keep ABS/ASA away from living spaces
- Ventilation matters more than mask type — engineering controls beat PPE
Every VOXFIL material ships with an MSDS — and we're happy to send full safety documentation with bulk orders.
